Always judge a wasteland by its graffiti

• It’s a bit hard to decipher, but the message in the rectangle of new red brick reads “this is a canvas”. The plastic packing tray below is just random junk, but echoes the shape of the “canvas” nicely. Wherever you find this sort of thing you can be sure there’s a colony of artists nearby – and sure enough, this was found in Hackney Wick at the edge of the Olympics development, which looks like a desolate post-industrial wasteland but whose tattered warehouses are still home to many thriving studios.
